Rural Livelihoods and Communities case studies
 
Following are case studies of some of the organisations and initiatives which have received grants under the Trusts' Rural Livelihoods and Communities initiative:

Under the Kharash Vistarotthan Yojana, the Trusts are supporting the Coastal Area Development Programme (CADP), which is implementing drinking water schemes in coastal villages across talukas in several districts of Gujarat, besides sanitation interventions in many villages
   
In 2010, the Trusts supported the Centre for Environment Protection (CEP), Aizawl, to focus on showcasing simple, low-cost, appropriate technologies to improve "jhum" cultivation, thereby enhancing rural livelihoods
   
Since 2009, CInI, Jamshedpur, supported by the Trusts under the Central India Initiative, is working with its partners to stabilise the production levels of maize through improved cultivation practices, using better quality of seeds and promoting village institutions for long-term management of resources
 
Federations of women's self-help groups have been promoted with support from Ibtada, a well-known non-profit organisation in Alwar that is supported by the Trusts under the Sakh Se Vikas - Rajasthan Microfinance Initiative
 
Under the SBI, Mumbai-based Swayam Shikshan Prayog promotes savings and credit groups as a platform for poor women to organise themselves and participate actively in local planning and development

Unstinting efforts to educate farmers on the benefits of IPM technology developed at the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, and rationalising other inputs for Basmati cultivation are responsible for the successful transfer of technology from institution to farm level
 
The Trusts are supporting the TNAU under the Reviving the Green Revolution initiative through a three-year project that aims to popularise small millets in hilly tribal areas and small farms of Tamil Nadu
 
The UBFDB, supported by the Trusts since 2004, was promoted as an autonomous agency in 2003 by the government of Uttarakhand in Dehradun to sustainably develop the existing resource base of bamboo and natural fibre in the state, besides promoting bamboo- and fibre-based livelihood options
 
Under a component within Himmothan Pariyojana, the Trusts are supporting PSI and CHIRAG, Sitla, towards undertaking a capacity building exercise for both, non-profit organisations and watershed committees, in the Garhwal and Kumaon regions, respectively
 
In November 2006, Kheda Talla was selected by the Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust (HIHT), Dehradun, as one of the 48 villages under Phase 2 of Himmothan Pariyojana, for enhancing health through drinking water and sanitation interventions

Under the Central India Initiative, the Trusts are supporting Naandi Foundation's endeavours towards organic farming since 2005
 
In 2004, Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN) began implementing the District Poverty Initiative Project (DPIP) in 126 villages across two blocks of Dholpur, and dairy promotion was identified as the major area for livelihood intervention
 
In 2009, the Reviving the Green Revolution (RGR) Cell, Ludhiana, operationalised the mKrishi project, introducing mobile-based agro advisory services in Punjab, in collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)
 
CmF was set up in Jaipur, to deepen and upscale the microfinance movement in Rajasthan. It employs highly qualified professionals to provide a wide range of technical and other support services to microfinance players
 
In 2008, Himmotthan, Dehradun, operationalised the Integrated Fodder and Livestock Development Project in partnership with different government departments and non-profits, to enhance livestock-based livelihoods in 83 remote villages of Uttarakhand

The Gramin Vikas Trust (GVT), with support from the Trusts, has been engaged in promoting sustainable rainfed agriculture and livelihood enhancement interventions, covering marginal tribal farmers in Jhabua district, Madhya Pradesh
   
During 2008-09, Daula, a village where pests and insects have been the scourge of farmers, was adopted by the Reviving the Green Revolution (RGR) Cell, Ludhiana, under the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) on cotton programme
   
Himmotthan, Dehradun, the Trust's nodal agency for Himmotthan Pariyojana initiated a fodder initiative against a bleak backdrop, with the aim of developing fodder resources
   
In 2007, Ibtada, Alwar, supported by the Trust under the, initiated a pilot programme which involved training and skill enhancement of Anganwadi workers. It was complemented by regular handholding support for all group activities
   
Kalanjiam Community Banking Programme has played a major role in reducing the external debt of the marginalised community, whilst inculcating the habit of regular savings

Under its 'Reviving the Green Revolution' initiative, the Trust is supporting the Department of Entomology, Punjab Agricultural University, over a three-year period towards studying the Mealy Bug, a pest that has reared its ugly head
   
The Trusts have been supplementing the Jan Utkarsha Programme, sanctioned by the Government of Maharashtra to Mittra to upscale the Wadi model of enhancing the livelihoods of tribal people in the central Indian states through land and water based livelihood interventions
   
Dilasa Sansthan, a non-profit organisation working in the region, came to know about the Phad irrigation system followed by Dhangars and approached the CInI Cell, the nodal agency for Central India Initiative (CInI), to help replicate the success of the Phad system in other areas
   
In 2004, the villagers of Pakh approached the Peoples' Science Institute (PSI), Dehradun, to include the village within their ongoing participatory watershed development programme
   
Winds of change swept in around 2003, with the establishment of the Uttarakhand Bamboo and Fibre Development Board (UBFDB) in Dehradun
