Participatory Videos
WHY should media remain in the hands of
a privileged few when communities can use
it as a tool of empowering community voices
and initiating social change?
Lights, Camera, Action! Ever thought these
could be the survival words for the underprivileged?
Handy Cams arent anymore for only
capturing leisure moments, family vacations
or weddings. Phones are used, not just to
talk on, but to shoot on as well. Video
is slowly but steadily becoming a weapon
for the deprived to capture their realities
and initiate social change. Marginalised
communities armed with this audio-visual
technology are articulating and expressing
their voice, stories and struggles through
this medium today.
We believe that video technology as one
of the tools of Community Media, possesses
the power to change the world. It has the
strength to help people to document human
rights abuse, prevents violence, and exposes
various unknown stories and issues to common
people. A peoples media is also effective
as it provides vital information on various
policies of public welfare and government
schemes.
The local story, language and humour used
in participatory video bring them closer
to peoples reality. It is cost-effective,
requiring only the most basic equipment
to make.
Youth Power
The core of youth development is to equip
young people with essential life and leadership
skills to play an active role in society.
As they embark on a journey from understanding
self to exploring society, young people
need to build skills and relationships that
empower them. A youth facilitator is a co-voyager
who can inspire and capacitate youth to
learn, explore and understand for themselves
their unique identity and potential. The
purpose is to nurture youth to become active
citizens in all spheres of life. By offering
the course to youth activists and youth
facilitators, the program aims to create
a youth media network that will strengthen
the field of youth development and youth
engagement in social action in the region.
