Activities within the grant and expected impact:

The project aims to facilitate Early Childhood Education (ECE) for all-round development and learning through play-way methods by trained Balwari teachers amongst 316 children (age group 3 to 6 years) from the Munda tribe, Muslim and scheduled caste (SC) families through twelve Balwaris located in nine villages of Rania block of Khunti district. It also aims at enhancing the community’s understanding of the importance of appropriate nutrition for early childhood growth, besides development and awareness on sanitation and hygiene for healthy growth of children through regular followups of children attending Balwaris and through meetings with parents. It is expected that successful implementation of the project would result in providing access to quality ECE services to children where the government system has failed to reach. Through a tie-up with an established resource agency, the Trusts hope to demonstrate quality ECE in a remote block in Khunti. The project will provide high-quality ECE services to 316 children from marginalised sections of society in the remote block of Khunti, having very poor coverage of Anganwadi services.

Impact of the project could be expected at multiple levels:
Children: improvement in nutrition, health status and linguistic, cognitive and creative skills of 80 per cent of the children along with higher participation and interest
Balwari workers: about 80 per cent of Balwari workers effectively put to practice their acquired skills on health and education. They also display newly acquired skills in teaching methodology, content knowledge and perspective, regarding ECE. This would be reflected in terms of hygiene in the centers, nutritional supplements given and implementing carefully designed activities to enhance children’s cognitive and linguistic skills.
Institutional: capacity building of local nonprofit organisations, local community based workers and initiation of institutional base by setting up models on ECE, while integrating inputs on health and nutrition in remote Rania block of Khunti district.
