Project name
Strengthening the quality and access to upper primary and secondary education in Khunti district
Grant operationalised
March 2009
Duration
15 months
Grant amount sanctioned
Rs4.98 million

Activities within the grant and expected impact:
The project aims to improve the access to quality education in the middle and high school level in the two tribal blocks of Khunti district and thereby addressing the high dropout rates within the formal schooling system, with a special focus on the girl child.

The project would result in:
Creation of education opportunities for 150 adolescent tribal girls, including 50 dropouts and 100 working girls, to pursue upper primary and secondary level education through a bridge centre and by provision of hostel facilities near the high schools
Improved learning levels among 600 children studying in grades between VIII - X in languages, mathematics and science by running remedial coaching centres
Access to secondary education for 200 children in the unserved remote habitations by opening two high schools
Mobility to 100 girls residing in approximately 15 remote villages to access secondary education
Encouraging active participation of community members by forming village committees

Close monitoring and resource support for focused capacity building is expected to result in the setting up foundations for subsequent scaling up of the work in the district.

Key components of the project include:
Running of Remedial Coaching Centres (RCC)
Setting up high schools in unserved areas
Running residential bridge camp schools for girls that have dropped out in grades VII-IX
Running hostels for girls in the vicinity of existing high schools
Provision of transport (bicycles) for girls studying in upper primary / high schools and staying in remote villages

The impact of the project is expected at multiple levels:
Parents / families: Parents and families of the dropout children and the girl child in particular will be sensitised and encouraged to send their wards to continue their education
Children / adolescents: Over 600 students will benefit from the remedial coaching classes, which will result into a 65 - 70 per cent success rate among the participating children in the state examination. 50 dropout girls will be able to undertake and clear their matriculation exams (as private candidates) with the aid of bridge camp schools; 200 girls will be able to pursue their middle and high school education by availing of the hostel and bicycle facility
Staff capacity building: 45 male and female staff members will be trained in imparting quality education to some of the most underserved blocks in the country. Successful completion of the project would lay the foundations for scaling up the intervention in subsequent phases
