Project name
Read to grow: A Multi-dimensional approach to promote reading among children
Grant operationalised
January 2009
Duration
3 years
Grant amount sanctioned
Rs8.56 million

Activities within the grant and expected impact:
This project is towards:
Strengthening and expanding the community learning centres (CLCs)
Initiating work with select public libraries and government schools and developing resources on libraries and children’s literature which is very useful for the sector.

Six non-profit organisations are partnering BCPT in running the CLCs. The project's key components include:
Consolidation and strengthening of the ongoing CLCs
Establishment of new CLCs
Enhancing functioning of public libraries
Promoting reading in municipal primary schools
Building resources and capacities

The project is expected to lead to:
About 14,000 children actively using the centres / libraries. At least 50 - 75 per cent (depending on the model) of the children will show improvement in their vocabulary and greater fluency in reading at the end of the 3-year period. All children regularly attending the centres would show greater interest in reading, books, openness to new ideas, enhanced ability to process new information, etc. Finally, at least 75 per cent of the children will attain enhanced abilities vis-à-vis expressing themselves.
Eight well-functioning community-based libraries cum learning centres in urban slums being established, along with classroom based libraries in three government school buildings and improved functioning of two public libraries. All libraries would be equipped with graded books, teaching-learning material and trained staff to run the centres with understanding of children and libraries. 40-50 per cent children will show significant improvement in their confidence levels, creative expression and interest in books; besides, at least 50 children will become members of the library each year.
Development of annotated bibliographies of children’s literature in English, Hindi and Marathi, an activity book on library activities and the organisation of a learning forum for BCPT’s partners and others engaged in running of libraries, which will contribute to the development of children’s literature sector
