Although significant inroads have been
made in providing access to, and enrolling
children in, primary schools, high drop
out rates, low levels of learning and inadequate
learning environment continue to plague
the elementary education system. It is a
fact that teachers play a critical role
in enhancing the classroom environment and
transacting the curriculum.
Consequently, the non-performance of teachers
has been singled out as a major reason for
the failure of the education system. However,
pre and in-service training of teachers
constitutes a major gap area in the field
of elementary education. Without addressing
this issue, it would be difficult to introduce
and sustain significant changes.
Recognising the importance of robust professional
development of teachers for sustaining lasting
changes in elementary education, the Trust,
through its Teacher Development Initiative
focuses on strengthening teacher development
programme.
It also promotes professional development
of teachers through supporting teacher resource
centres, which:
|
|
Provides space
for a sustained programme intervention
for the growth and learning of teachers |
|
|
Enables continuous
teacher development inputs that are
closely linked with classroom practice
and needs of teachers |
|
|
Provides for a
variety of professional support services
to teachers ranging from subject based
training, classroom based research,
and pre-designed training programmes |
