Activities within
the grant and expected impact:
This project is unique in its attempt to
bring the methodologies of both the sciences
and the social sciences onto a common platform.
The grant comprises of four interconnected
initiatives:
|
|
Integration of
Natural and Human Sciences at the Indian
Institute of Science: The IISc brings
in representatives of disciplines in
the broad area of human sciences, providing
opportunities for visitors to interact
with the scientific community of IISc.
The lectures and workshops are open
to students and faculty of all the science
and social science institutions in Bangalore
|
|
|
Survey of existing
curricula: The CCS undertakes a detailed
study of existing integrated curricula
and related educational practices at
the undergraduate, postgraduate and
doctoral levels in different institutions
in the country |
|
|
Curriculum development:
The survey of the existing curricula
feeds into the formation of a revised
version of the PG course, The
Production of Knowledge in Human and
Natural Sciences at IISc and new
UG curricula |
|
|
Field-testing
of new curricula at PG and UG levels:
Two PG-level courses are being taught
at IISc, the first course in Year I
of the project and the second revised
course in Year III. One UG-level course,
developed through the course, will be
tested in two Indian Institutes of Science
Education and Research (IISER) at Kolkata
and Pune, and two Indian Institutes
of Technology (IIT) in Year III. |
The project provides a forum for the three
ends of the higher education spectrum, the
research centres, universities and undergraduate
colleges, to come together. In the first
phase itself, eight premier institutions
the UAS, two IISERs, two IITs, Bangalore
University, and at least two undergraduate
spaces in Bangalore (St. Josephs College,
Christ University) - will be directly affected
by the project. About 250 students (50 each
from IISc, two IISERs and two IITs respectively)
will be directly affected when the fundamental
courses are taught each time.
