Activities within the grant and expected
impact:
IMABBSUs present efforts fall short
of ensuring adequacy of blood for patients
in and around Dehradun. There is a substantial
gap between the need for blood components
and their availability. There can be a good
donor base within the community, provided
each capable, eligible person donates blood,
and it is only the Non-Remunerated Voluntary
Blood Donation (NRVBD), which can ensure
safe blood transfusion.
IMABBSU is addressing the present gap between
the need and current availability of blood,
through promotion of Social Marketing of NRVBD
(SMV). The major objectives of this three-year
intervention are to:
Improve awareness of SMV among the
1.5 million strong community through
sensitisation |
Enhance availability and accessibility
of blood and blood components |
Advocate rational use of blood and
blood products |
Develop relevant information, education
and communication materials |
Key activities include:
Conducting special events to sensitise
and educate the community |
Increasing blood donation camps |
Creating an in-house studio that
develops locally relevant and dynamic
messages |
The project is expected to result in:
Increase in community awareness about
voluntary blood donation |
Increase in the availability and
accessibility of blood units to individuals
and institutions |
Increase in the proportion of voluntary
blood donation, vis-à-vis replacements
Reduction in the postponement of the
surgeries in the sector for want of
blood |
Increase in the rational usage of
blood and blood components |
Ultimately, it is hoped that the intervention
will bring about a reduction in the gap
of unmet needs of the state, and will evolve
as a model organisation in accordance with
the National Blood Policy.
IMABBSU will expand its reach from two
districts at present, to eight districts.
It envisages blood collection to double
from the approximately 10,000 units per
annum currently to approximately 20,000
units per annum, in three years time.
