Activities within the grant:
Human organs are one of the most precious
possessions, capable of providing a lease
of new life to those with end-stage organ
diseases. Unfortunately, in India cadaveric
donation is yet to gain mass appeal, however,
many people are now in the know of the value
of donating the organs of those deceased
for the benefit of those alive. This grant
allows MOHAN Foundation, a pioneer organisation
in the promotion of cadaveric organ donation,
to embark on a structure training programme
for transplant coordinators. Transplant
coordinators are trained to create positive
environment for the bereaved family and
encouraging them to donate organs of the
deceased, so that their loved ones continue
to live on.
The Government of India, in its recent
gazette titled The Transplantation
Of Human Organs Rules, 1995 (GSR NO. 51(E),
dr. 4-2-1995) [As amended vide GSR 571(E),
dt.31-7-2008] has made transplant coordinator
nomination mandatory before a hospital is
registered as a transplant hospital.
The grant also involves preparing a database
of the hospitals conducting transplantation
for the information of the public.
