| Major gains have been
recorded over the past five decades in the
health of the people, with visible improvements
across various parameters. Despite large resources
of physical infrastructure in the form of
Primary Health Centres and Sub-Centres, the
status of health of the rural poor remains
dismal, with high infant / maternal mortality
rates, and communicable diseases like malaria
and tuberculosis.
Under the Rural Health Programme, the Trusts
are evolving innovative delivery systems
that emphasise preventive care, seek to
develop close linkages with community outreach
programmes, and focus on the rural population,
community based health workers, and early
diagnosis of major killer diseases.
