Activities within the
grant and expected impact:
ASA has been involved with the promotion of
Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM)
in Madhya Pradesh since 2003. PIM is an effort
to promote partnership between the government
(provider) and the farmers (receiver) for
better utilisation and management of water
and land resources. In the ongoing project,
ASA is developing a ground for large-scale
replication of PIM in MP for enabling policy
and implementation strategy.
Five minor irrigation schemes within a
radius of 40-50km in the western MP, Barwani
district are being taken up for undertaking
restoration of canal systems and establishing
systematic PIM in field. The project is
being implemented with the help of 1,258
families in 19 villages. Out of these, 53
per cent belong to the scheduled tribes,
46.6 per cent belong to the backward class,
and 0.4 per cent is scheduled caste.
The objective is to increase agriculture
productivity through the restoration of
canal systems and establish effective irrigation
management systems within the PIM Act of
MP.
It would also indirectly help in consolidating
the experiences of PIM to help create an
enabling environment for PIM in the state.
The focus of the project is towards promoting
improved livelihood interventions in the
command area of five select irrigation systems,
which would cover 2,592 hectares having
a canal network of 73.81 kilometres.
The key components focus around:
|
|
Building the capacity of the community
|
|
|
Restoration of
canal systems |
|
|
Demonstration
of improved agriculture and promotion
of efficient water use measures |
|
|
Promotion of Farmers
Producers Company (FPC) |
The expected impact of the project, based
on the broad impact indicators developed
by ASA would lead to an increase in annual
income of households from Rs15,000 to Rs30,000.
The issue of food security through the increased
crop productivity would be resolved, and
each household would be able to generate
year round food security, along with bringing
nearly 90 per cent land under Rabi cultivation
for additional incomes.
