Project name
Better natural resource management and governance in Mandla district, Madhya Pradesh through leveraging National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme under CInI
Grant operationalised
November 2007
Duration
3 years
Grant amount sanctioned
Rs8.78 million

Activities within the grant and expected impact:
The project, in collaboration with FES, aims at complementing the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) of the central government, initiated in 2005-06 in 100 most backward districts of India with the focus of providing assured 100 days labour to the rural communities in the villages.

Mandla district in Madhya Pradesh, wherein the NREGS work is being implemented, has been singled for the ongoing project. Covering about 3,000 households (13,000 population) in 21 villages of 15 panchayats, the project focuses on promoting improved livelihood interventions, through improved agricultural practices, including land and water based livelihood interventions.

Key livelihood intervention components of the project include:
Enhancing vegetative cover on forest and common land, soil conservation and water harvesting measures
Land development and improved agriculture interventions along with horticulture promotion
Strengthening the Panchayat governance mechanisms to improve the governance of natural resources, besides focusing on capacity building and training to the community.

The livelihood intervention is linked to the soil and water conservation through the integrated watershed approach being implemented through the NREGS. The annual income of the families is expected to increase from the Rs10,000 per annum at the start of the project, to Rs20,000 per annum after a period of three years, with the systematic implementation of the livelihood focused interventions such as improved agriculture, horticulture promotion and dairy development.

It is expected that the households would be able to generate crop productivity, supporting year round food security. Increasing cropping intensity and promotion of vegetable cultivation and horticulture plantation are also being undertaken, both at input as well as output levels, such that the market is also systematically addressed for better incomes.
