Activities within
the grant and expected impact:
The project addresses the livelihood needs
of 2,778 marginal tribal farmers in Jhabua
district, Madhya Pradesh, through the promotion
of improved rain-fed agriculture interventions,
creation of water resources and promotion
of optimum utilisation of these resources.
The overall project area covers 19 most
backward tribal villages spread over an
area of 3,026 hectares, comprising of micro
watersheds, which would be treated with
various integrated soil and water conservation
measures, with support from National Rural
Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). The
project aims to augment the income of each
family by about Rs15,000 per annum, thus
lifting them above their current 'below
poverty level' (BPL) status.
Components within the proposed project
include:
|
|
Establishing and strengthening of Community
Based Organisations: This involves promoting
the Community Based Organisations (CBOs)
such as Watershed Development Committees,
self-help groups and village development
committees to manage the common property
resources and overall development of
villages. It also involves reaching
out to over 2,778 families, strengthening
these CBOs to plan, implement, and manage
the created livelihood development activities.
|
|
|
Integrated land
and water development: This involves
planning and implementing soil and water
conservation measures, besides integrating
improved agriculture and better water
management practices. Interventions
cover all 2,778 families spread across
3,026 hectares (ha), thereby enhancing
crop productivity by 20-30 per cent
in 1,945 ha arable land, and augmenting
food security by two-three months. |
|
|
Comprehensive
wadi development: This covers horticulture
plantation along with forestry, inter-cropping,
health, women's development and other
development interventions, impacting
over 1,000 families by augmenting their
annual income by Rs15,000 from Year
3. |
|
|
Sustainable agriculture
promotion: This involves promoting traditional
and high quality seeds of major crops,
field demonstrations and trials and
linking with the farming systems, impacting
all 2,778 families by augmenting their
annual income by Rs7,000. |
