Increasing agricultural productivity of farming systems in parts of central India through participatory research-cum-demonstrations and knowledge sharing innovations

Organisation
International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hyderabad
Project name
Increasing agricultural productivity of farming systems in parts of central India through participatory research-cum-demonstrations and knowledge sharing innovations
Grant operationalised
February 2008
Duration
5 years
Grant amount sanctioned
Rs42.46 million

Activities within the grant and expected impact:
The project operates within select twenty benchmark villages (4 nucleus and 16 satellite), and is developing these as sites of learning in the East Singhbhum and Gumla districts in Jharkhand, and Jhabua and Mandla districts in Madhya Pradesh. The selected benchmark villages serve as training sites, and as sites for undertaking action research.

In each village, during each season, 20-25 on-farm trials are being conducted on farmers’ fields to evaluate various improved management practices for increasing agricultural productivity and incomes. Within this project, the integrated livelihood based interventions are being undertaken with key focus on promoting better agriculture practices in various Kharif and Rabi crops to enhance productivity. An Integrated Genetic and Natural Resource Management (IGNRM) approach is adopted, to promote sustainable utilisation of the land and water resources.

The project provides regular technical inputs to ongoing field projects on crop and water management practices. Linkages with the state agriculture universities, research and academic institutions are being developed for the long-term qualitative extension support to the farmers.

Key components of the project include:
Promotion of IGNRM approach through field based capacity building towards a holistic farming system for the sustainable use of available natural resources
Capacity building through knowledge sharing and technical backstopping for developing farmers’ skills and ensuring no crop failure
Field demonstrations on improved agricultural practices through scientific technologies such as improved seeds, micronutrients, Integrated Pest Management, etc.
Multi-institutional consortium approach along with Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Farmers Training Centres, Civil Society Organisations and research organisations
Promotion of market led diversification through systematic studying of the market demand and supply system
Policy advocacy through organising policy workshops, development of policy documents on enhancing productivity of rain-fed agriculture, and dissemination

The intervention is expected to enhance crop productivity of different crops by 40 per cent, as against its baseline status. The family incomes from agriculture and from allied sector activities will be enhanced by 40 per cent to the baseline of about Rs15,000 per annum. The 20 villages would act as models for promoting systematic cropping technologies in the field, enhancing crop productivity along with strengthening the livelihood of the communities.
