Activities within
the grant and expected impact:
In July 2006, the Trust initiated a one-year
field project with KGVK for enhancing the
livelihoods of tribal community in 16 villages
in Bundu block of Ranchi district, during
which various livelihood interventions such
as:
|
|
Revival
and renovation of old pond structures
|
|
|
Construction of
dug wells and lift irrigation schemes
|
|
|
Stabilising Kharif
crop and promotion of vegetable cultivation
|
|
|
Capacity building
of Community Based Organisations (CBO)
was undertaken |
The project successfully reached out to
over 1,000 families and raised their annual
income levels from Rs10,000 (at the start
of the project) to Rs15,000 at the end.
The ongoing Phase II project focuses on
strengthening the prevailing base of livelihood
interventions through consolidation in the
current villages. The project focuses on
further strengthening the Village Development
Committees (VDC) and Self Help Groups (SHG)
to undertake the responsibility of implementing
the livelihood interventions, and managing
them on a long-term basis.
The key areas of focus are:
|
|
Strengthening
the CBOs towards the implementation
and management of the various livelihood
interventions |
|
|
Ensuring the equitable
and optimum utilisation of the created
water resources through crop diversification
and improved agriculture |
|
|
Supporting each
and every household with assured irrigation
support for about one acre land, to
ensure year round food security and
improved quality of life |
The key activities include:
|
|
Renovation
of water resources |
|
|
Construction of
water harvesting structures |
|
|
Soil and moisture
conservation |
|
|
Agriculture extension
and afforestation |
|
|
Allied livelihoods
such as piggery, poultry, goatery, lac,
etc. |
The levels of income for the beneficiaries
are expected to rise from Rs10,000 per annum
to Rs20,000 per annum for new households,
and about Rs25,000 per annum for the existing
households of Phase I. The intervention
undertaken in the Phase I project is being
further strengthened along with promoting
additional livelihood activities, thus ensuring
the projected increase in income for all
the households.
The key issue of food security
will be resolved by the increase in agricultural
productivity and income from allied activities.
It is expected that the project would raise
30 per cent of the below poverty line (BPL)
households to the above poverty line (APL)
levels by the end of the three-year period.
