Livelihood promotion of tribal families in Hazaribag through development of their land and water resource

Organisation
Society for Upliftment of People With People Organization And Rural Technology (SUPPORT), Hazaribag, Jharkhand
Project name
Livelihood promotion of tribal families in Hazaribag through development of their land and water resource
Grant operationalised
July 2010
Duration
2 years
Grant amount sanctioned
Rs2.88 million

Activities within the grant and expected impact:
Based on the positive results from the first phase of support, this second phase of support is extended to consolidate livelihood interventions undertaken so far. The project would cover 1,960 households (70 per cent tribal) from 20 villages of Churchu block, Hazaribag district, in which, work in 15 villages is already underway and the thrust would be on providing follow-up and strengthen village institutions to sustain the assets created during the first phase. Agriculture forms the key source of livelihood for these families with most of them dependent on rainfed paddy. Only 3.14 per cent area of the net cultivable area is under irrigation. In the five new villages, development of water harvesting structures and promoting alternate sources of irrigation and allied livelihood interventions will be the main focus, with equal emphasis on formation of CBOs. The project under consideration aims to integrate the agriculture and allied interventions with the water resources development interventions supported through National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP). Notably, SUPPORT has received approval from the district administration of Hazaribag to implement land and water resources interventions under NREGP. The integration of creation of water resources and promoting improved agriculture / allied livelihood interventions would increase the income from Rs12,000 per annum to about Rs20,000 per annum for the farmers; whilst Rs25,000 per annum in the case of farmers involved from the earlier phase, as indicated by the project end study undertaken at the end of phase I).

Key components of the project include:
Land and water development
Promotion of alternate source of irrigation
Agriculture development and horticulture promotion
Promotion of allied activities
Promotion and capacity building of village institutions.

Outcomes expected are:
Six hectares (ha) of land reclaimed through leveling and bunding, 12 WHS and 19 Bari wells constructed to irrigate 42 ha. This would promote Kharif Paddy Stabilization and vegetable promotion providing year round food availability and income of about Rs10,000 / annum.
Forty ha of land ensured with irrigation. The assured water supply would provide support irrigation to paddy, which would in turn ensure year round food sufficiency. Vegetable promotion would be undertaken during Rabi season to generate additional income base of about Rs7,000 – 10,000.
Paddy yield would increase from 2 tons / hectare to about 4 tons / hectare through KPS strategy. Horticulture promotion in 18.36 hectare land would provide additional income of Rs15,000 from fourth year of plantation.
Ten farmers take up pig rearing, which would generate additional income of about Rs20,000 from year II.
Eighty SHGs and 20 VSS/farmer societies will be formed and strengthened. The SHGs would be linked to allied livelihood interventions, which would enable members to generate additional income through vegetables and piggery.
