June 2007
Duration
3 years
Grant amount sanctioned
Rs113.74 million

Activities within the grant and expected impact:
The first phase of support to PRADAN, spread over a three-year period ended in March 2007. This project focused on initiating various livelihood interventions for the tribal communities and enhancing their income sources.

The outcome of the project was positive with key results being:
Year-long food security for all families through increased paddy productivity from seven quintals/acre to 14 quintals/acre, and crop diversification
Migration levels reduced by about 70 per cent, with most of the families generating their livelihoods within the village or from the peripheral villages
Increase in income levels from Rs10,000 per annum to Rs20,000 per annum through all livelihood interventions
Basket of livelihood choices available with farmers for income enhancement
Promotion of farmers’ cooperatives towards the maintenance and management of the sectoral livelihood resources
Strong linkages developed with government projects for tribal communities

The ongoing three-year project focuses on strengthening the present base of livelihood interventions through consolidation in the current villages and expansion to new villages. The project focuses on promoting women’s groups in the project villages to saturate project interventions. It intervenes through these groups in various livelihood interventions. PRADAN is working with about 15,000 additional families during the project period, taking the total household coverage to about 80,000 families.

The key areas of focus in the Phase II project are:
Expanding the SHG base in existing project villages by developing and using a cadre from within the present SHGs to rapidly expand outreach
Expanding and strengthening the coverage of livelihood programmes by helping each family take up multiple livelihood activities to significantly enhance income
Promoting peoples’ institutions and strengthening the institutional development aspect of these Community Based Organisations (CBOs)

The key intervention proposed includes:
Establishing and strengthening CBOs
Improved agriculture and Wadi for additional income of Rs10,000 / household / annum
Land and water resource development for additional income of Rs5,000 to Rs10,000 per annum
Livestock promotion for additional income of Rs10,000 / household / annum
Poultry and enterprises promotion for additional income of Rs10,000 / household / annum.

The overall expected outcomes of the project are that the levels of income for the current beneficiaries are expected to go up from Rs20,000 per annum to Rs30,000 per annum. In the new project villages, the incomes are expected to increase from Rs10,000 per annum to Rs20,000 per annum.
