Project name
Integrated watershed development and management in Khatgara and Bandla Bera Nala watershed under CInI
Grant operationalised
April 2008
Duration
3 years
Grant amount sanctioned
Rs12.69 million

Activities within the grant and expected impact:
The key approach being followed in the project focuses on developing an Integrated Watershed Development model in 15 tribal villages of Hazaribag district, Jharkhand, covering about 2,600 ha land of 1,617 tribal households.

The key objectives are:
Enhancing agricultural production through improved agricultural practices and increasing irrigational coverage
Improving access of the tribal communities to alternative and supplementary livelihood options such as dairy, horticulture, etc.
Empowering village level institutions and their federation towards improved decision making

The main components within the project include:
Construction of water harvesting structures such as farm ponds, irrigation wells, earthen dams, check dams, etc.
Promotion of soil conservation measures such as contour trenches, field bunds, etc.
Promotion of agro-forestry
Agriculture development through providing support for Kharif crops, thereby ensuring food security and promotion of Rabi crops and vegetables for income enhancement
Promoting allied livelihood interventions such as goatery, piggery, dairy, etc. with women SHGs
Capacity building of community organisations

The project will result in increasing the income of the households from the current levels of Rs8,000 to Rs20,000. The key issue of food security would be also resolved through increase in agricultural productivity and income from allied activities. At the end of the project, it is expected that 75 per cent of non-irrigated land would be brought under irrigation coverage through the water harvesting measures under watershed.
