Promotion of livelihoods for tribal development through Community Coordination Teams in the Munchingput and Pedabayalu mandals of Vishakhapatnam district, Andhra Pradesh

Organisation
Sahayog Community Coordination Network, Vishakhapatnam
Project name
Promotion of livelihoods for tribal development through Community Coordination Teams (CCT) in the Munchingput and Pedabayalu mandals of Vishakhapatnam district, Andhra Pradesh under CInI
Grant operationalised
July 2008
Duration
3 years
Grant amount sanctioned
Rs10.44 million

Activities within the grant and expected impact:
The project works with 16,000 households in the Munchingput and Pedabayalu mandals of Paderu division.

The key objectives are to:
Establish cluster level development resource centres for the community through intensive capacity building of 12 CCTs; and, for community leaders to address economic, social and political issues in the two Mandals
Enhance the livelihood of the poor farmers by educating them and demonstrating interventions such as non-timber forest produce (NTFP), horticulture and agriculture practices
Ensure that a farmer receives better prices by promoting various value addition activities and marketing interventions through a cooperative forum

The overall project design is such that out of the 12 CCTs, four would be selected through a participatory approach. These would be trained and developed as model CCTs, consequently acting independently as resource teams on various development interventions in their cluster of 60 villages each. These four CCTs will promote 40 strategic model villages and 4 demonstration farms to promote best livelihood options, and practice local self-governance.

These four CCTs will subsequently promote 12 marketing sub-groups, 3 cluster level marketing groups, and 1 centralised mandal level marketing group to cater to different livelihoods.

Key activities include:
Capacity building
Livelihood promotion interventions
Institution building

The impact visualised currently is based on the livelihood activities being implemented by CCN over the past five years. It is expected that the households involved in improved agriculture, NTFP, and horticulture promotion would generate about Rs20,000 per annum, as compared to the current figure of Rs12,000 per annum.
