Activities within the grant:
This project is towards initiation of a few pilots and the consolidation of previous pilots of six different areas of work expected to directly benefit over 2,000 households covering around 13,000 beneficiaries in 48 villages and 5,000 beneficiaries indirectly. The major components include:
High altitude programme for the upper Himalayan communities
Preparatory work for strengthening microfinance (MF) for developing a systematic microfinance programme to integrate microfinance in all existing livelihood-based programmes by strengthening and developing local village-level institutions. This will be scaled up with intensive research studies, bank and other linkage development and MF trainings
Non-Timber Forest Produce programme, mainly focusing on medicinal and aromatic plants
Rural tourism
Hydrology and water resources
Climate change, which involves mainly developing an environment to discuss the issue and its impacts on natural resources at this initial stage
Management Information Systems as a continuation and development of the work in the first phase.

The impacts expected are:
Development of medicinal and aromatic plant enterprises, community-based enterprise development and market linkages will lead to increased incomes, development of a larger strategy for the alpine communities of Uttarakhand and development of a scaled up proposal for the region
Demonstration of community-based MF work, understanding the context and building clarity and internal systems within Himmothan to expand MF work in Uttarakhand and development of clear plan of action for microfinance in Uttarakhand
Long-term market development through trainings in sustainable harvesting / cultivation, value addition and community management of resources and also, increased productivity, better and sustained incomes, land conservation and awareness of future risks
Increased community action and individual entrepreneurship and also increased incomes from the development of home-stays, nature trails, new markets for foods such as eggs, fruit, vegetables and rice, all produced by local farmers and small businesses such as restaurants and shops; besides, maintenance of traditional lifestyles will also be promoted
Water availability in villages involved in the model catchment project will increase. The programme will promote an understanding of mountain groundwater systems amongst local programmes and NGO staff and increased incomes from enhanced agricultural production
Development of a policy atmosphere in the region, through discussions and studies, and future preparedness for climate change impacts in the state
