Improving community health through drinking water and sanitation

This component of Himmothan Pariyojana involves the implementation of water supply and sanitation projects, with a focus on hygiene. It is being implemented through village-based water and sanitation committees known as Management Societies (registered under Societies Registration Act 1860), which plan, design, implement and manage their own schemes.

Phase 1 of this intervention was divided into three phases namely ‘Pre-planning’, ‘Planning’, and ‘Implementation’. Four organisations were an integral part of this component during Phase 1, namely:
Himalayan Gram Vikas Samiti (HGVS), Gangolihat
Society for Motivational Training and Action (SMTA), Vikasnagar
Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust (HIHT) Jolly Grant
Kassar Trust, Mankote

Phase 1 of the water and sanitation projects under Himmothan Pariyojana covered 44 villages, benefiting 3,035 households comprising 19,363 beneficiaries. 98 drinking water schemes, 136 kilometres of water supply pipelines and 1,868 sanitation units were completed by September 2007.

Phase 2 of the water and sanitation projects under Himmothan Pariyojana incorporated lessons learnt during Phase 1, and was committed to enhancing community health through drinking water and sanitation.
