Activities within the grant:
The proposed project is towards continuation of the best practices identified in phase I, for scaling up through a cluster based approach. Interventions will be focused in four districts of Uttarakhand (viz Chamoli, Bageshwar, Uttarkashi and Udham Singh Nagar). A total of 32 villages will be covered under the project reaching out to 1,300 beneficiaries directly.

Key activities planned include:
Cluster appraisal and preparation of micro-plans
Bamboo resource development
Establishment of four artisans facility centers
Capacity building of artisans
Material exploration and research
Publications and outreach
Exposure visits

The proposed project is expected to bring 480 hectares under ringal cultivation and 1,800 hectares under bamboo cultivation. The plantation activities will be undertaken by UBFBD through contribution from other sources. The plantation programme should enhance availability of raw material to artisans to 500kg ringal per artisan annually, from the year 2010 onwards. Time taken by artisans to collect raw material is expected to decrease by 2 hours per day, which in itself will help enhance income by 25 per cent by year three of the project. The artisans will have a choice of at least six fast growing bamboo species that will address the issue of round the year availability of raw material. Four Artisans Facility Centres (AFC) will be developed under the project, two centres are proposed to be funded by the Trust supported programme. Funding for the other two centres will be raised from other projects by UBFBD.

It is estimated that over 270 artisans will be directly benefited from these AFCs, and 64 artisans groups will be formed and linked to the AFCs. Artisans' savings are estimated to increase from Rs76,000 in the first year of the project to Rs172,000 from the second year of the project. Overall, the project is expected to realise an additional income from Rs18,000 to 30,000 annually. The project will train more than 480 artisans in new bamboo, ringal and natural fibre based interventions directed to add value to their present product range.
