Organisation
Coastal Salinity Prevention Cell (CSPC), Ahmedabad
Project name
Participatory approaches for enhanced water resources management at Medha creek, Porbandar taluka, Porbandar district, and Nicole Bandhara, Mahua taluka, Bhavnagar district.
Grant operationalised
April 2007
Duration
2 years
Grant amount sanctioned
Rs6.37 million
Activities within the grant and impact:
The project addresses the issue of deficiency of irrigation water for about 130 agriculture dependent families over an area covering 670 acres, thereby augmenting their income from present levels of Rs60,000 – Rs70,000 per annum to about Rs100,000 – Rs150,000 per annum.

Key components of the project include:
Lift Irrigation (LI) System at Medha creek and Nicole Bandhara involves the development of a LI system at bandharas for optimum water utilisation. This would impact all 130 families through the availability of 46.43 million cubic feet water for irrigating 670 acres area, besides recharging wells for second crop irrigation, resulting in an increase in income to the tune of Rs40,000 – Rs80,000 per household.
Micro watershed development: Soil and moisture conservation activities such as building bunds on fields over 750 metres, 15 gully plugs, construction of contour trenches over 40 metres, and seven gabions, are being carried out in the command area of the LI system. This would affect 60 families through enhancing agricultural output by 10 per cent to 20 per cent, and an increase in income of roughly Rs5,000 – Rs8,000.
Promotion of water efficient irrigation systems: These are being promoted in the project area for optimum utilisation of available water resources. It would benefit 50 families through an increase in crop production to the tune of 20 per cent – 30 per cent, and an increase in income of around Rs10,000 to Rs20,000.
Agriculture training and inputs: This involves promotion of crop diversification and horticulture plantation. It would benefit 90 families with an additional income of Rs10,000 per annum from year III.

Animal husbandry: Activities include training on management practices, breed improvement through artificial insemination, improving the health of cattle through medical camps, improved fodder cultivation practices, etc. It would benefit 200 families with an additional income of Rs160 per day per animal from year IV.

The project implementation team of Saurashtra Voluntary Actions (SAVA), Porbandar, and Gujarat Rural Institute for Socio-Economic Reconstruction (GRISERV), Vadodara, is implementing the project, spread over a period of two years. They comprise engineers, agriculturists and community organisers, at respective project locations.
