Project name
Scaling up of community based microfinance and livelihoods initiatives in Ajmer
Grant operationalised

Duration
3 years
Grant amount sanctioned
Rs 8.41 million

Activities within the grant:
The three-year project is towards increasing outreach from existing 1,400 to 3,500 households, by:

Promoting 177 new self-help groups to increase outreach to a total of 300 groups and organising them in three federations;
Promotion of an integrated goat-rearing programme with 1,500 households, organised in 40-50 goat-rearer groups
Undertaking agriculture productivity improvement in staple Kharif crops of bajra (Pearl millet) and guar (legume fodder) to enhance food and fodder security of 1,000 members of groups
Exploring the feasibility of promoting additional livelihood options for members through aloe-vera cultivation and processing on a pilot scale.

Key interventions include:
Formation of 177 new SHGs and promotion of three federations
Promotion of integrated goat-rearing based livelihood programme
Intervention in Kharif food crops
Pilot on feasibility of aloe-vera cultivation and processing as additional income source.

The project is expected to lead to:
(1) Household level:
Increased access to credit for 3,500 poor families, resulting in Rs10,000 per household for 123 existing groups and Rs5,500 – 6,000 per annum per household for 177 new groups
Through goat-rearing, an increase in income of 1,500 households by Rs9,000 per annum
Insurance coverage for at least 3,000 families
Enhanced food security for 1,000 households by 2-3 months
Promotion of three federations providing a range of services to members — credit linkages, agri-inputs, member and animal insurance and animal health care services
Testing of a pilot on aloe-vera cultivation and small-scale processing unit to explore additional source of income for households.

(2) Environmental impact:
While open grazing has the negative impact of environmental degradation, the proposed project seeks to bring a gradual shift from existing open grazing to stall-fed grazing practices. Promotion of legume fodder is one of the key strategies envisaged for achieving this, along with capacity building on balanced feed. Stall-fed grazing is also important from the point of view of increasing value realized from market, wherein weight is the deciding criteria.
