NEPED-NRTT livelihood initiative through community based piggery

Organisation
Nagaland Empowerment of People through Economic Development (NEPED), Kohima, Nagaland
Project name
NEPED-NRTT livelihood initiative through community based piggery
Grant operationalised
April 2009
Duration
1.5 years
Grant amount sanctioned
Rs3.54 million

Activities within the grant and expected impact:
The project focuses on income generation of rural communities in the state through community based piggery. The project will be piloted in 20 villages in 10 districts. With the lopsided picture of demand and supply for both, pork and weaned piglet, NEPED has conceptualised the need for introducing ‘Pig Breeder’s Family’ within a cluster of villages.

This new concept shall attempt to:
Bridge the gap between demand and supply of fattened pigs for slaughter
Make available quality weaned piglets to resource poor households at an affordable price
Improve the socio-economic status of rural families through livestock

If the proposed NEPED community pig breeding programme can be successfully replicated in every village of Nagaland (1,100 villages), then the present rate of import of piglets for fattening – 130,000 piglets per annum - can be easily stopped and thus provide rural households with an opportunity for alternate source of sustainable cash income through piggery.
