Activities within the grant and expected impact:
The project aims to explore and develop the enormous potential of rock bee harvesting in the Patkai-Saramati (Eastern Himalayas) range of the state. The project will focus on:
Providing diversified employment opportunities through commercial honey hunting and market linkages for rural poor farmers
Preserving the existing traditional knowledge and skills of rock bee hunters and enhancing their skills by imparting training on sustainable harvesting technique
Producing pure, organic and high quality honey
Ensure maintenance of habitat and biodiversity of the region through pollination in primary forests and cultivated areas

The project is being initially piloted in Kiphire district in ten villages targeting 150 rock bee hunters. The project is expected to generate income of Rs3 million (30MT of honey and 1.5 MT of wax) by the end of 2010. The 150 rock bee hunters are expected to earn approximately Rs20,000 per head annually by the end of 2009.
