Eleutheros Christian Society (ECS), Tuensang, Nagaland
Project name
Promoting sustainable livelihoods through wadi and establishing market linkages
Grant operationalised
March 2010
Duration
1 year
Grant amount sanctioned
Rs2.43 million

Activities within the grant and expected impact:
The proposed project will be implemented in Tuensang district, covering 10 villages and 600 households. The villages are inhabited by the tribal community, namely, the Chang tribe, which depends mainly on agriculture, cutting and selling of timber, daily wage labour, livestock rearing, forest products and vegetable cultivation for sustenance. Shifting cultivation or ‘Jhum’ is one of the main systems of agriculture, in which, after cropping for two years, the Jhum field is left to fallow for eight to ten years before the farmers return to utilize the land. However, due to the growing population and pressure on arable land and increasingly erratic rainfall, farmers are unable to harvest good crops. This calls for an integrated and comprehensive management of land and natural resources for sustainable livelihood. The project proposal has two specific components, namely:

To improve and enhance livelihood and quality of life of 100 households through rational land use management by promoting citrus and banana orchards in two villages namely, Noksen and Sangsangyu
Sustainable marketing management for 600 households from ten villages — eight villages from an ongoing Wadi project funded by NABARD and the two above mentioned villages. Proceeds from selling oranges is expected to provide each farmer an additional income of Rs75,000 from year five onwards; similarly, Rs24,000 from selling bananas from year two (till the fourth year), and Rs1,500 in the first year from selling vegetables grown in Wadis. The objectives of the project are:
(a) To ensure optimum land, water and manpower resource management; to enhance income and food security of tribal families through developing Wadis (orchards)
  (b) To establish processing units and specific markets linkages for banana and orange.

The key activities entail:

Horticulture development and allied activities
Processing, value addition and market linkages
Building capacities of Wadi families through exposure and quality trainings
