Validation and dissemination of IPM technology for quality production in Basmati rice, vegetable crops and maize in Punjab

Organisation
Department of Entomology, PAU, Ludhiana
Project name
Validation and dissemination of IPM technology for quality production in Basmati rice, vegetable crops and maize in Punjab
Grant operationalised
June 2008
Duration
3 years
Grant amount sanctioned
Rs6.32 million

Activities within the grant and impact:
The project covers over 400 farmers in 16 villages, across eight districts, covering an area of 1,600 hectares. The adoption of IPM will result in expected net profits to the tune of Rs4,000 per hectare, and Rs3,000 to Rs8,000 per hectare in the case of Basmati rice and vegetables respectively. It will also result in 50 per cent reduction in pesticide use in the case of maize.

IPM Basmati rice
Six villages have been selected under the project in three districts of Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Taran Taran to validate and disseminate IPM technology to farmers. Ten farmers in each village have been selected for demonstration of IPM technology in Basmati rice. Information centres (one in each selected village) have been set up, and the charts depicting the complete IPM technology are exhibited in the centres. One scout has also been appointed in each village.

IPM Maize
Four villages have been selected under the project in the districts of Hoshiarpur and Nawanshar to validate and disseminate IPM technology to farmers. Ten farmers in each village have been selected for demonstration of IPM technology in maize. Trichocards have been stapled in the field of IPM farmers. Dead hearts due to damage by maize borers have been removed at first hoeing. One spray of endosulfan @ 100 ml/acre has been applied in the fields of IPM farmers.

The incidence of insect pests in maize is recorded at weekly intervals. Information centres (one in each selected village) have been set up, and the charts depicting the complete IPM technology are exhibited in the centres.

IPM Vegetables
Two villages, namely, Manderan and Jalkhelan Kheri (Fatehgarh Sahib) have been selected under the project to validate and disseminate IPM technology to farmers on cole crops. The selection of villages and setting up of information centres has been completed.

Various research issues identified are study on economic threshold levels of diamond back moth and Spodoptera on cole crops, fruit and shoot borer and mite on brinjal and fruit borer in tomato and management of insect pest of using biological control methods such as Bt sprays, fungicidal formulations, NPV formulations and trichocards in tomato and cabbage.
