Organisation
Directorate of Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana
Project name
Popularisation of summer moong, and gram for crop
Grant operationalised
April 2008
Duration
3 years
Grant amount sanctioned
Rs4.17 million

Activities within the grant and impact:
The project seeks to:
Popularise summer moong and gram cultivation in Punjab
Disseminate improved technology at farmers’ fields to obtain higher productivity
Increase the production of moong and gram in Punjab by demonstrating improved technology in on-farm trials
Encourage diversification within the rice-wheat cropping system, enhancing nutritional security and soil health, and improving the income of the farmers

This project aims to increase the area under summer moong from 40,000 hectares (ha) to 75,000 ha within three years. Notably, the farmers who cultivate an additional moong crop in between wheat and rice, stand to augment their incomes by about Rs10,000 per hectare. The cultivation of summer moong also adds 30-40 kg of nitrogen per hectare through symbiosis, post harvest, thereby maintaining soil fertility, and sustaining crop productivity. Finally, moong grains being rich in protein, iron, etc. also help in improving health, particularly of children and women.
