Activities within the grant and expected impact:
The IWMI-Tata Water Policy Programme was launched in 2000, with the support of Trusts. Now under a second phase of support, the programme presents new perspectives and practical solutions derived from the wealth of research done in India on water resource management.

Its objective is to help policy makers at the central, state and local levels address their water challenges — in areas such as sustainable groundwater management, water scarcity, and rural poverty — by translating research findings into practical policy recommendations.

Through this program, IWMI collaborates with a range of partners across India to identify, analyse and document relevant water-management approaches and current practices. These practices are assessed and synthesised for maximum impact on policy, through IWMI-Tata Publications.

The key areas of focus are:
Idea incubation for the Trusts, wherein the IWMI-Tata Programme generates ideas that have far reaching positive consequences on the poor, and thus offer important funding opportunities to the Trusts
Technical backstopping for the Trusts, where the IWMI-Tata Programme provides and arranges technical support in project appraisal, monitoring and evaluation in projects that have Natural Resources Management as a significant component, on behalf of the Trusts
Retaining emphasis on water policy issues, while seeking to adopt a holistic approach to comprehensively address the issues of Natural Resources Management
Adopting a multi-location research strategy by building up a national profile on a range of important policy issues in the water sector, generating a detailed profile of a dozen regions that capture most of India’s hydro-geographic diversities, and augmenting capacity for research in water policy in a number of partners in those locations
Expending significant efforts at capacity building of water sector researchers
Undertaking research in organisational and institutional processes in the agencies involved in the water sector, whilst exploring, understanding and incorporating the real constraints at improving policy formulation and implementation
