Under the project, 'Drought Proofing in West Rajasthan', the Trust has collaborated with His Highness Maharaja Hanwant Singhji Charitable Trust (MHSCT), to create lasting solutions, by evolving technological and organisational innovations for integrated development of drought prone areas. Project Sahyog, as it is also called, has a four pronged approach, with the following activities: (i) water resource development; (ii) agriculture diversification; (iii) animal husbandry; and (iv) income generation. Initiated in September 2002, Phase 1 of Project Sahyog came to an end in February 2007 and significantly enhanced the lives of people in 16 villages in Balesar block of Jodhpur district, over a four year period. With the aim of providing immediate relief measures during the summer of 2006, due to failure of the monsoon during 2005, the Trust pro-actively initiated the third phase of a six-month integrated drought relief programme for West Rajasthan. Project Sahayata was carried out in collaboration with MHSCT and amongst the activities supported were: (i) purchase and distribution of cattle feed and fodder; (ii) installation of hand pumps for drinking water; (iii) holding veterinary camps for livestock; (iv) providing drinking water; (v) plantation of green fodder; (vi) seed and sowing support to poor farmers in the project villages; and (vii) providing food security to the poorest of the families.
